Redhead

Redhead Aytha americana
Waterloo, ON
3 March, 2013

The Redhead is a very attractive diving duck found in southern Ontario during the winter, generally however on large bodies of water such as the Great Lakes where it feeds on zebra mussels among other organisms. Unusually, this bird has been present at the pond adjacent to a condominium complex in the north part of the city for about three weeks now. Obviously it is having no trouble finding food in this pond which is spring fed and remains ice-free. I suspect it will remain there until it migrates to its breeding area.
