Red-tailed Hawk

Red-tailed hawk Buteo jamaicensis
9 March 2013

This pair of Red-tailed Hawks was seen in Wellesley Township, Waterloo County today, providing evidence that courtship behaviour is well underway. Until a pair bond has been established the smaller male is reluctant to approach the female. As can be seen from the picture the two birds are side by side; no doubt nest construction will soon begin.
